When to Visit Tanzania for Kilimanjaro and Safaris

Timing matters on Kilimanjaro and on the savanna. Dry months bring clearer summit weather and easier wildlife spotting. Wet months bring fewer crowds and greener landscapes. This guide breaks down what each season feels like so you can pick dates that match your goals.

Dry seasons: June through October and January through February

These are the most popular months for Kilimanjaro climbs and northern-circuit safaris. Trails are less muddy, cloud cover tends to break in the afternoon, and summit night often brings cold but stable conditions. On safari, animals gather near water sources and grass is shorter, which makes lions, elephants, and buffalo easier to spot in Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

If you want the classic dry-season experience, book Machame or Lemosho routes between late June and October, or schedule a short dry window in January or February. Lodges and camps fill early, so planning six to nine months ahead is smart for peak weeks.

Long rains: March through May

Tanzania's long rains bring afternoon showers and lush vegetation. Kilimanjaro is still climbable, but trails can be slippery and visibility varies. Some climbers prefer this season for quieter camps and greener photo opportunities on the lower slopes.

Safari parks remain open. Lake Manyara and Tarangire can be excellent for birdlife and newborn animals. Expect lower nightly rates at many lodges compared with peak dry season.

Short rains: November and early December

Rainfall is lighter and less predictable than the long rains. Many operators treat this as a shoulder season. You may get mixed weather on Kilimanjaro, but crowds are thinner than in July or August.

Wildlife viewing is still strong, especially when fronts pass quickly and skies clear. It can be a good value window if your dates are flexible.

Matching Kilimanjaro with a safari on one trip

Most Kopa Tours guests combine a climb with a four- to six-day safari. Dry-season months let you stack summit weather with reliable game drives. If you climb in a shoulder month, add a rest day in Arusha before safari days so your legs recover.

  • Climb first, safari second if you want the summit effort before relaxed game drives.
  • Safari first if you prefer to acclimate on easier days before the mountain.
  • Build in at least one buffer day for flights and luggage delays.
