Leave No Trace
The Lemosho 8-Day route is a recent addition to Mount Kilimanjaro.
The route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, then continues east over three days of travel, where it then meets up with the Machame route. As you continue eastward, you will pass below Mount Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field before advancing to the summit.
Is Lemosho the route for you? Quick Facts:
3 reasons to choose Lemosho Route
- The most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro with wide open vistas of Kilimanjaro’s peaks on multiple points throughout the trip.
- Newer route with less crowds of people.
- Longer time on the mountain (8 days) means more opportunity for you to acclimatize to high altitudes - choose this trail for the highest summit success rate.
2 reasons to choose a different route
- This trail is the most expensive one we offer due to the extended number of days spent on the mountain.
- During the rainy season, the Lemosho Route can get quite muddy. Tall boots are a must!
Bottom line
Lemosho is the most quiet, isolated, and beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. If you have the financial means, and available vacation time - then Lemosho is a best choice for you!

Wake up and eat a hearty breakfast - a breakfast buffet, omelette bar, coffee, and tea are all offered at Springlands hotel. Your head guide will meet you at the hotel this morning to double check you have all of the gear you need for your trip. If you are missing any gear (ski pants, hiking poles, gloves, sleeping bags) you may rent them from the rental shop at Springlands hotel: Check out the rental prices for more information.
Your large bag must weigh less than 30 lbs, this is a requirement that the Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society has outlined to protect porters from carrying too heavy of loads up the mountain. You will carry a daypack which should contain: snacks, water, sunscreen, and any other daily needs. Once your bags are loaded, you will drive from Moshi town to Londorossi Gate, which takes 4 hours. If you instead stayed the night in Arusha, the drive will be 1.5 hours. As your guides and porters prepare, be on the watch for wildlife! It is possible to see amazing birds during your first day, be sure to watch out for the silver-cheeked hornbill - it looks like a toucan only with a silver beak.
From Londorossi Gate, you will drive to the Lemosho trailhead. You will be provided with a sack lunch for this day. The Lemosho route is less crowded, take the time to enjoy the peaceful serenity as you wind through the forest to ascend to Mti Mkubwa camp (meaning Big Tree).
Once you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, you will follow your guide to the registration office. Here you will sign in and register that you made it to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Your campsite will have been prepared for you by your porters - a tent for your party and a mess tent for eating and socializing will be ready for use. Your guides will let you know what time to expect dinner. After dinner, your guides will go through the health and safety protocol of checking your heart rate and oxygen level to record on their wellness chart - at Kopa, we care immensely about your safety and wellbeing while on the mountain. After checking your health and determining that you are well, your guides will discuss the next day’s plans and explain what adventures are in store for you. Lastly, you will go to sleep in your tent on your comfortable foam mats.
Elevation Graph
Lemosho route has beautiful, varied scenery as you visit all five distinct climate zones - Cultivation zone, Rainforest zone, Heather and Moorland zone, Alpine Desert zone, and Arctic zone. The Lemosho route is one of the longer routes offered.
If you would like to maximize your chance of summiting, choosing a longer route is beneficial because it allows more time for acclimatization and more rest time for your muscles.

From the first contact with Kellie, tru the entire trip, we had the constant guide and counseling about the trip. Her immediate responses to our questions were on point.
John (main guide) and all the team of porters were instrumental to say the least. We choose a challenge 6-d trip to Kili, and we made it thanks for the constant support of John. I would not believe we could have done it up and down without his support. Meals were nutritious, abundant, tent were cleaned and ready at all time. Our duffybags were treated well. The trip was just spectacular.
Thanks Kopa for this amazing adventure. No doubts in using Kopa for your trip to Tanzania. Next time, as I am getting older, I will use a longer route, 7 days or more. Cheers.
I am glad to have made it to the summit.
