Is Marangu the route for you? Quick Facts:
Is Marangu the route for you? Quick Facts:
4 reasons to choose Marangu Route
- Gradual slopes all the way to the summit - Marangu Route has the most smooth elevation profile of all routes on Kili.
- Sleep in huts along the way - beds with mattresses are provided, sleeping bags are still required.
- Quick out and back trail to Kilimanjaro's summit - for those who want to spend less money on their climb and do not mind crowds.
- Route does not require any technical climbing skills.
3 reasons to choose a different route
- Altitude sickness can be a problem due to the short number of days spent on the mountain.
- This route follows the same path up the mountain and down the mountain, therefore Marangu is considered to be less scenic than other routes.
- Can be very crowded due to 2-way traffic going up and down on the trail.
Bottom line
If you have previous hiking experience AND have spent time in high elevation levels - then Marangu is a great choice for you! Gradual slopes and warm huts to sleep in make this trail "the Comfort Seeker's Choice."

Wake up and eat a hearty breakfast. Your head guide will meet you at the Springlands hotel this morning to make sure you have all of the gear you need for your trip. All bags must weigh less than 30 lbs, this is to protect the porters from carrying too heavy of loads. If you are missing any gear (ski pants, hiking poles, gloves) you may rent them from the rental shop at Springlands hotel: check out the rental prices for more information.
Once your bags are loaded, you will drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, which takes around 45 minutes. You will be provided with a sack lunch for this day. As your guides and porters prepare, be on the watch for fun new flora and fauna! It is possible to see colobus monkeys, eucalyptus trees, and even malachite sunbirds in this area. As you begin your journey past Marangu Gate, you traverse through the rainforest, this is where you will see most of the animals on Kilimanjaro. As you progress, the trail widens to show magnificent hillsides.
Upon reaching Mandara Hut, you can take a 15 minute side trip to Maundi Crater. Here you can have excellent views of both Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Dinner is served in the dining huts at 7 PM. Bathrooms with running water are available at this camp.
Once you reach Mandara Hut Camp, you will follow your guide to the registration office. Here you will sign in and register that you made it to Mandara Hut Camp. Your campsite will have been prepared for you by your porters - a tent for your party and a mess tent for eating and socializing will be ready for use. Your guides will let you know what time to expect dinner. After dinner, your guides will go through the health and safety protocol of checking your heart rate and oxygen level to record on their wellness chart - at Kopa, we care immensely about your safety and wellbeing while on the mountain. After checking your health and determining that you are well, your guides will discuss the next day’s plans and explain what adventures are in store for you.

From the first contact with Kellie, tru the entire trip, we had the constant guide and counseling about the trip. Her immediate responses to our questions were on point.
John (main guide) and all the team of porters were instrumental to say the least. We choose a challenge 6-d trip to Kili, and we made it thanks for the constant support of John. I would not believe we could have done it up and down without his support. Meals were nutritious, abundant, tent were cleaned and ready at all time. Our duffybags were treated well. The trip was just spectacular.
Thanks Kopa for this amazing adventure. No doubts in using Kopa for your trip to Tanzania. Next time, as I am getting older, I will use a longer route, 7 days or more. Cheers.
I am glad to have made it to the summit.
